Facts about Tissue Donation

• Many more people are eligible tissue donors than they are organ donors. As many as 50 recipients can benefit from one single tissue donor.

• There should be no cost to donor families for tissue donation.

• Tissue donation should not interfere with funeral arrangements. Families are encouraged to discuss tissue donation with their funeral director.

• According to the Donate Life America, more than 1 million tissue transplants are performed in the United States each year. It is estimated that one in 20 Americans will need some type of tissue transplant.

• Bone and connective tissue transplants help repair defects, eliminate or reduce pain and promote faster healing. Donated heart valves replace defective valves and improve heart function

• Tissue includes bone, skin, heart valves, connective tissue and veins used in surgeries and medical research. Organs include the heart, lungs, kidneys, intestines, pancreas and liver
